Latest Inflation Data Pressures U.S. Markets

November 10, 2021
By Vlad Karpel

Markets snapped their impressive streak on Tuesday and continued to trade lower today with all three major U.S. indices closing in the red. After riding strong earnings data and economic data, as well as expected action by the Fed, markets reached record territory. Consumer price inflation data presented a multi-year peak in its latest report while weekly unemployment data reported a drop. Coinbase and Disney saw shares significantly drop following weaker than expected earnings reports while DoorDash rose over 11% after its impressive report and all-stock deal, valued at over $8 billion. Earnings continue to be the main factor influencing markets; PYPL, AMAT, and DHI are key earnings announcements this week that can potentially influence the market direction. The VIX trades near the $17 level. Next week, retail sales, import price index, and industrial production monthly data are set to release and can influence the next move in the market. Please watch the critical support levels on the SPY at $460 and then at $455 as we do expect the market to continue to pull back in the next two weeks and then rebound toward the end of the month/early December. Globally, Asian markets traded to mixed results while European markets closed in the green. We encourage all market commentary readers to maintain clearly defined stop levels for all positions. For reference, the SPY Seasonal Chart is shown below:
