Global Markets Dip Following China Property-Market and Delta Variant Concerns

September 20, 2021
By Vlad Karpel

As we approach the Fed decision on Wednesday, the volatility index (VIX) moved higher nearing the $25 level. We recommend watching the critical support levels on the SPY at $434 and $420 as we still expect some short-term correction to continue this week and potentially next week as well. ABDE, LEN, and FDX headline earnings to be released this week while on Tuesday the two-day Federal Open Market Committee is set to begin. The latest FOMC decision will be revealed Wednesday at the conclusion of the meeting when Fed Chair Jerome Powell meets with the press. Key economic reports due this week include August building permits and housing starts, as well as leading economic indicators report and additional comments from Fed Chair Powell on Friday. Last week, markets saw positive support pushing towards the upside following the Fed’s reassurance of transitory inflation. Earnings and the bond market will continue to dictate market movement as well as response COVID infection rates and Hurricane Ida’s impact. We encourage all market commentary readers to maintain clearly defined stop levels for all positions. For reference, the SPY Seasonal Chart is shown below:

U.S. markets unanimously closed in the red, with the Nasdaq down 2.18% and the Dow Jones hitting a multi-month low. Concerns regarding the Chinese economic impact following the property market/real estate issue sparked within China last week. The dip in Chinese benchmarks was not well received as additional markets worldwide saw losses while the VIX, typically referred to as the fear index, saw a significant boost. Long-term U.S. notes saw decent drops as well as oil and gold, while the U.S. dollar rose slightly. Globally, both Asian and European markets closed significantly lower.

Key U.S. Economic Reports/Events This Week:

  • Building Permits (August) – Tuesday
  • Housing Starts (August) – Tuesday
  • Existing Home Sales (August) – Wednesday
  • FOMC Decision/Fed Chair Press Conference- Wednesday
  • Weekly Jobless Claims (9/18) – Thursday
  • Leading Economic Indicators (August) – Thursday
  • New Home Sales (August) – Friday
