Growth and Balance Sheet

The company reported a net income of $10.5 million, or 5 cents diluted earnings per share, for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2013 ending February 1. That's down from a net income of $94.8 million, or 47 cents diluted earnings per share for the same quarter last year. EPS included an asset impairment and asset write-offs of 22 cents per share, also this year’s fourth quarter was shorter for a week in comparison to the previous year fourth quarter. AEO opened 64 stores, including 39 factory stores, six stores in Mexico and seven stores in China and Hong Kong. Gross margin for the quarter was 29.38%, down from 41.16% for the same quarter last year, primarily due to higher promotional activity and the deleverage of rent on negative comparable sales. Operating profit margin for the quarter was 2.30% compared to 12.53% for the same quarter last year. AEO forecasted first quarter EPS of fiscal year 2014 are expected to be from -1 cents to 0 cents, compared to actual EPS of 14 cents for the first quarter of fiscal year 2013.
